Augusta, GA—It all started with a huddle and then it was off to work extreme makeover style…135 employees from the Augusta T-Mobile call center teamed up with “City Year”, a non-profit organization that helps after-school programs like the Boys and Girls Club. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves Thursday with hoes in hand to give this yard a facelift. From the baseball field to the playground, volunteers say children at this club will have fun in a great environment.
Laudy Florentino, T-Mobile Augusta: “A lot of times they are home alone and we want to provide a place where they can come where they can be productive, be guided.”
Inside, the club was also transformed, with freshly painted walls, new accessories and more games for the kids to enjoy. Volunteers say this Augusta Boys and Girls Club was another stop they were glad to make.
Kenneth Wakwe, City Year member: “We have 20 sites across the United States and also a site in Johannesburg, South Africa.”
The day ended with volunteers coming together to surprise the club with a $10,000 check.
Joe Davis, E.W. Hagler Unit director: “To the teens, this will stay with them for a long time and it will be something that will help grow our organization with materials, supplies to help with our academics and also with our sports activities.”
And of course, the day would not be complete until the children got a chance to see the transformation inside.
