Investigators in Edgefield County are dealing with a spike in home burglaries. In the past month, more than a dozen burglaries have cost homeowners a total of $100,000. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.
Edgefield County, SC—It’s the same story over and over, again, in Edgefield County.
John Cason, Burglary Victim: “We were saving for a vacation.“
George Schwuchow, Burglary Victim: “Feel sick to your stomach.“
In the past month, multiple neighborhoods along Martintown Road have been burglarized.
Nearly $3,500 worth of items from one house:
Corporal Robbie Harter, Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office: “Anything from lawn equipment, laptops, jewelry…”
$3,000…
Cpl. Harter: “…Anything someone could carry off.“
$7,000…
$72,000 from another house…
Investigators say most of the thefts happened in broad daylight…and they believe at least some of them are related.
Cpl. Harter: “Anytime you’re dealing with a burglary suspect, they are considered to be dangerous. If someone should happen to come home and find one in progress, we don’t recommend you confront them. Back off, call 911, and let us handle it.“
Reports show thieves are taking the usual guns, money, tools and equipment, but also have targeted prescription medications…even food.
Schwuchow: “I mean, if you needed something to eat or something, ask for it. I mean, coming and kicking someone’s door in, that’s an invasion of privacy. That’s something you don’t get back.“
Tuesday, this homeowner is sending a message out to thieves:
Schwuchow: “I hope you get what’s coming to you…“
….And setting up his home with a new security system.
Cpl. Harter: “If you have an alarm, use it; write down your serial numbers.“
Others…
Cason: “Never missed so much as a screwdriver.“
Are left trying to recover something they might never get back.
Cason: “That’s the bad part. I mean, the money’s not so much the important part; it’s that they’ve got nerve enough to come into the house. All they had to do is ask.“
Our friends at EdgefieldDaily.com tell us three more burglaries were reported to the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office, earlier Tuesday evening.
Officers say they are working to step up their enforcement efforts in those neighborhoods.
