UPDATED: Two Teenagers Arrested For Midland Valley High School Bomb Threat

Two teenagers are in jail tonight, charged with making bomb threats against an Aiken County high school. Midland Valley High School was put on a 4-hour lock-down last month after someone allegedly told a student they would “blow up the school.“ Investigators say the teens thought it was all a joke, but parents we spoke with say this is no laughing matter. WJBF News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.

Graniteville, SC—Jackie Collins is catching up on some reading while she waits in line to pick up her daughter from school.

But, she says she was caught off guard last month, when her daughter told her the school had been placed on lockdown for hours, while Aiken County Investigators searched for a bomb.

Jackie Collins, Parent: “I was kind of worried about it, I was scared…“

Investigators say, in January, a student told the principal about a call from someone who threatened to blow up Midland Valley High School, and shoot people with a shotgun.

Aiken investigators traced the call to a cell phone, and this week, arrested 17-year-old Cody Hart and 18-year-old Jeffery Ferrell.

According to investigators, Hart and Ferrell say the calls were just a prank…but it’s not something school officials, or parents are laughing at.

Collins: “No, you don’t joke about things like that, because it can really happen. And just something like that could cause injury from people panicking, you know?“

Patrick Filyaw, Parent: “They need to take it very seriously, and the punishment should be to the full extent.“

Lisa Proctor, Parent: “I think they need to be prosecuted.“

Collins says she’s glad it was a hoax because the safety of her daughter and other students is what matters, but she hopes the arrest of the two teens will serve as a warning:

Collins: “Maybe someone will realize not to do something like this, cause you know, you’ll get caught, hopefully!“

Investigators tell us Hart and Ferrell were not students at Midland Valley High School. They are charged with making a bomb threat, unlawful use of a telephone and disturbing schools.

School officials say they do take each bomb threat seriously. 1300 students were put on lockdown for hours in January, while investigators conducted a thorough search of the school.
