There is still no break in the rash of home burglaries in Edgefield County. At least one home a week, in the past month, has been hit and more than $100,000 worth of goods have been taken. But residents tell us, they’re stealing more than just money and household items. These thieves are taking their peace of mind. WJBF News Channel 6’s News Channel 6’s Joy Howe has the story.
Edgefield, SC—It’s the spot in the neighborhood where all the talk happens….and the talk at the Sportsman’s Corner right now is all about the burglaries.
Melissa Norton, Edgefield, SC: “Everybody’s talking about it. Oh yeah, everybody, everybody.“
At least one home a week has been hit in the last month, more than $100,000 worth of goods taken.
Al Stewart, Edgefield, SC: “I mean, it’s scary.“
The store is just up the road from where investigators say the latest burglary took place…on Ridge Road.
The quiet neighborhood was struck Tuesday night, when homeowners arrived to find two men running away from their property.
The area was searched, but no one was found; and quiet neighborhoods are now restless.
Norton: “When I go in, I’m looking in rooms, looking in closets, under the bed.“
Investigators say they believe at least some of these burglaries are related, and officers are now designated to patrol this area. But, part of the problem investigators face…descriptions are not lining up.
Zach Sapp, Edgefield, SC: “We think it might be a group of guys, maybe.“
Norton: “I’ve heard it’s white guys, and I’ve heard it’s 3 African American guys.“
Sapp: “I don’t know if they’re younger or older…”
Norton: “Then two African Americans, then one white, one African American…so it’s just like, nobody knows!“
Investigators did find one clue: about $800 worth of stolen tools stashed in woods, along this road. That lead is just one of several they’re following…trying to track down those who are taking what isn’t theirs.
Zach Sapp, Clarks Hill: “This is my home, this is where I live. So if someone else thinks they have the right to come up onto my property and take some of my stuff, you bet I’m going to be a little bit mad at it.“
Investigators say it will take people looking out for each other, to help catch these burglars. They’re asking anyone who sees something suspicious, to call them.
