Augusta, GA—Seven months after she was found “not guilty by reason of mental illness”, Jeanette Hawes was back in court Monday. The Public Defenders Office presented the judge a report on Hawes’ progress. It shows that Hawes is responding to counseling, taking all her medication, and is involved with social activities at the state hospital where she is housed. Based on that, they believe Hawes should be released.
Jeanette Michelle Hawes: “I just want to say that I have gotten 100% better, Judge Overstreet.“
Hawes even told the judge that if she’s released, she would join a program that would help women who may be facing the same depression that led her to kill her children.
Hawes: “To be a voice to the young women, to let know how important it is to get help when needed…“
But, the state does not want her released. They argued that the report shows some inconsistencies.
It didn’t take long for Judge Overstreet to make a decision.
Judge Carlisle Overstreet: “Shows she still has instability, that she will be a threat to herself, and society. Consequently, at this time, she will remain in custody of Georgia Regional.“
One of Hawes’ relatives told us the decision is best:
Gary Willingham, Hawes family member: “I think the judge made the right decision, based on her need for continued medical attention. She’s going to need that.“
Hawes is set for another mental evaluation review in court next year.
