Aiken, SC—The Aiken County Coroner, Tim Carlton, says Donald McCalla, Jr. died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Neighbors called police shortly after 8:00 p.m., Tuesday night, after hearing gunshots near the corner of Pendleton Street and Abbeville Avenue. When officers arrived, they found no one at the scene. But about ten minutes later, hospital officials at Aiken Regional Medical Centers called police to let them know a man was brought in with gunshot wounds. The victim was later identified as McCalla, who died a short time later.

Officers say, without witnesses, they’re having a tough time trying to figure out a motive.

They’d like to talk to the man who dropped off McCalla at the hospital, but Investigators say that man has disappeared.

Sgt. Aaron Dowdy, Aiken Department of Public Safety: “Something’s not adding up there. One of the folks that was in the vehicle of the victim who was shot, we can’t find. We know he was at the hospital, so we’re trying to locate him. He’s certainly not a suspect at this point; we just want to find out what he knows.“

Officers spent the day, knocking on doors in that neighborhood and interviewing residents, trying to figure out exactly what happened Wednesday night.

Investigators say they believe the shooting was drug-related. McCalla was released from prison in December, 2008, on drug-related charges.
