More Plan to Stay Home for the Holidays…

Some are going by land, others by air, and some are staying put. Many say the economy is what’s keeping them close to home, and say the only thing they plan to spend this holiday…is time with family. Count on Joy Howe for the story.

Augusta, GA—Over the river and through the woods…

Robin Hines, Tullahoma, TN: “Tullahoma, TN.“

Dennis Kitchings, Augusta, GA: “Little town called Wagener.“

A little cheaper this year, we go.

Kitchings: “As low as they are, you can travel a little.“

But not everyone thinks the price at the pump, outweighs the price of staying home.

James Stallings, Augusta, GA: “Economy’s too bad. People just rather stay home, take care of business, be with their families.“

AAA reports fewer people will hit the roads this Thanksgiving ...but drivers we talked to say they’re still fighting the holiday rush.

Brenda Green, Lizella, GA: “The highways are thick. They need to get out there and look, they’re traveling out there!“

The traffic at the Augusta Regional Airport was holding steady…no cancellations to report, and no shortage of customers.

Shortly after noon today, there was no shortage of traffic on I-20…

Green: “With the construction up there didn’t help either.“

And there is no shortage of enforcement to make sure things go smoothly.

Lance Corporal Trevor Clinton, South Carolina Highway Patrol: “Of course Thanksgiving being a great big travel period, so of course our job gets a lot harder because you get a lot more traffic on the roadway, and a lot more to control.”

But they’ll do their best…beginning Wednesday night, as checkpoints go up all around the two-state.

So, no matter how close…

Stallings: “Stayin’ home…“

Or how far…

Hines: “You do what you can, when you can, if you’re able.“

It’s once again time to journey through the holiday season.

Checkpoints will go up around the two-state beginning at 6 o’clock, Wednesday night. Officers say they will be cracking down on drunk and aggressive drivers.
