Last-Minute Shoppers Seeing Red This Season

The economy may be in the red, but that’s good news for many last-minute Christmas shoppers. Many retail stores have gone into “discount mode,“ trying to attract customers into their stores. So, is it working? Count on Joy Howe to find out.

Augusta, GA—This Christmas, Carl Brown, is in search of red.

For his wife, he wants this red…and this red.

Carl Brown, Shopper: “If I took something home that wasn’t a good deal…wasn’t 50% off at least, it would come back the day after!“

He’s one of many shoppers at Macy’s in the Augusta Mall on this busy Christmas Eve…

Bob Goodman, Store Manager: “The whole tempo changes on this day, everyone’s fast and furious, and they’re looking for the good value.”

But Carl says waiting until the last possible minute isn’t just a tendency, it’s a tradition.

Brown: “I just inherited it from my father and I’ll pass it on to my son, we want to keep the Christmas traditions alive and we shop late, but we shop well and hopefully we’ll take home more for our money.“

And, with just a little help, he’s got an eye for savings:

Joy Howe, reporting: “Because it’s taken at the register, then you take half of that, then it’s not so bad, right?“

Brown: It’s a really good deal and I feel so much better knowing that!“

Here at Macy’s, there are plenty of deep discounts to be had…

Kelly Thomas-Carroll, Shopper: “They were having some really good sales, real impressed with the sales.“

Goodman: “We’re really excited about some of the values we have. Some of our best selling items are cashmere sweaters.“

Values like 40% off cashmere sweaters help Carl’s mission.

Retail numbers all over the country are in the red, as consumers watch their budgets, so that makes these red numbers that much more important.

Brown: “I think I’ve been more careful with what I spent this year due to the decline in the economy and you want to make sure you get the most bang for your buck, but I don’t think I’ve stopped buying.“

Which is a good thing for Carl’s wife…even if when we left him…

Brown: “Got to keep looking, not on sale.“

The Christmas Eve mission continued…

This year Macy’s is doing its part to help people in need. For every letter written to Santa and delivered into their store’s North Pole mailbox, the company will donate one dollar to charity…their goal is to hit $1 million.

Macy’s and the other stores at the Augusta Mall will close at 6:00, Christmas Eve, and re-open the day after Christmas at 8 a.m.
