Augusta, GA—-Mark Young and his wife own Corporate Sporting Events. It’s a hospitality business they run from their home. And with an unstable economy any type of tax relief is a bonus.
Mark Young, Augusta: “I think at this moment in time, I think alot of people are excited about having this advantage.”
For Young and other Georgia homeowners that advantage is not having to pay extra on their property taxes since relief grants have been restored. Initially Governor Sonny Perdue cut the grants because of a 2 point 2 billion dollar deficit. But thanks to the stimulus package homeowners are off the hook.
Fred Russell, Augusta City Administrator: “It’s a flat level where you don’t see an increase of 2-3 hundred dollars if that money had not been funded by the state.”
Russell says because of the downturn in the economy he was worried that homeowners would have had to pay more on their taxes.
Fred Russell: “We were concerned that we were going to be forced by legislation to go back and re-bill the taxpayer for that money that was not collective so that would have been additional money to have to pay on taxes.”
Young says he hopes that the help from the federal government doesn’t come back and affect homeowners again.
Mark Young: “If it comes through and does what it says it will do without any penalties and coming back later I think it will be great as long as everything is clear.”
In the meantime Young and his wife continue to run their business and save whatever they can.
