YOU DECIDE: Does New, Controversial Bible Go Too Far?

A new book depicting stories from the “Bible” is raising eyebrows with comparisons to modern day celebrities, humanitarians and events.

UNDATED—It’s known to many as the “Good Book” but a new book illustrates the bible with modern pictures. Controversial? You decide.

“ Bible Illuminated: The Book” uses the scripture and translates it with pictures.

Some of the pictures include images of well-known representatives, humanitarians and in some cases celebrities like Bono and Angelina Jolie.

One religious studies professor says the power of the comparisons can be dangerous.

Jim Veninga, Religious Studies Professor: “One might go too far and if you do go too far it might seem like you’ve become part of the culture rather than to have the Bible as a powerful voice. That speaks to the culture.“

The book is currently in stores. Some say it’s just an interpretation and churches have been interpretating the bible for years.

Does it go too far? I don’t think so.  I mean, it’s not a PICTURE book!  The text is still there (I think it’s the Good News version, a bit easier than KJV) so we the readers get to interpret for ourselves.

Having photos accompany text helps us look at old ideas in new ways.  I’ve seen the revelation quote about being amazed by and following The Beast pinned onto a picture of gasoline overflowing from a car.  Oil addiction? Idol worship?  It’s intriguing.

But no, I don’t think the publishers interpret the text FOR us. They re-print (the Bible), we decide (what it means to us)!
