PRESS RELEASE
Chatham County Grand Jury Rules on Cases Related to Actress Miley Cyus
SAVANNAH, GA – The Eastern Judicial Circuit/Chatham County District Attorney’s (DA) Office released today, grand jury decisions for the following cases related to teen actress Miley Cyrus, for arrests which occurred during the production of the Disney Film, “The Last Song,” on Tybee Island.
A team of attorneys, including Chatham County district attorney Larry Chisolm and State Court deputy chief asssistant district attorney Roxanne Formey presented charges today to the grand jury against Mark Owen McLeod, for attempting to make contact with actress Miley Cyrus in June 2009 and for obstructing Tybee Island Police Officers. Charges presented to the grand jury included: obstruction of an officer (felony), criminal attempt to commit stalking (misdemeanor), and disorderly conduct (misdemeanor).
After hearing the case, the grand jury returned a no bill, which indicates there was insufficient evidence to present felony charges to Superior Court. The DA’s team also assessed the case and concluded the case to be a misdemeanor and is transfering the case to State Court for prosecution. The DA’s Office continues to pursue other warrants pending against McLeod.
The grand jury also heard a second case today involving charges against Sean Christian Mathis, who in June 2009, made threats to kill Miley Cyrus to the actress playing her double in the movie, Stephanie Vickers. Charges presented by the DA’s Office against Mathis included: terroristic threats (felony) and disorderly conduct (misdemeanor). The grand jury returned a true bill on both charges. This case will be prosecuted in Superior Court.
Both cases were investigated by the Tybee Island Police Department.
No additional information is available on these cases due to pending prosecution.
