NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) The president of Newberry College is running for the Republican nomination for South Carolina Education Superintendent.

#### Zais (ZAY-us) entered the 2010 race Thursday. The retired Army brigadier general has run Newberry College for 10 years.

Zais says South Carolina has some great public schools. But he says he wants to make sure every child in the state can go to an excellent school and be taught by an excellent teacher.

Zais says parents need to have choices for their children's education, but his announcement didn't give details.

Zais graduated from the U.S. military Academy in 1969 and served 31 years in the Army as a paratrooper and Ranger.
