COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Legislators have taken the first votes to override Gov. Mark Sanford’s vetoes of bills that would exempt school districts from having to make up snow days this year.

The House voted 82-9 on Tuesday to waive a state law that would require public schools to hold an extra school day to make up for classes canceled Feb. 4 because of snow.

Four lawmakers from Pickens County overrode the veto of another bill that would forgive the March 2 snow day at their local schools.

The Senate also must override the vetoes of both bills.

Sanford vetoed the two bills on April 9, saying less time in the classroom is no way to solve budget problems.
