Georgia’s hotly contested U.S. Senate runoff campaign is almost over. Incumbent Saxby Chambliss and challenger, Jim Martin, have been fighting tooth and nail for Chambliss’ seat. Both candidates were in the Garden City this morning, trying to drum up support in the campaign’s final hours. Senator Chambliss brought a political heavy hitter with him. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin attended a Chambliss rally at the James Brown Arena, and Jim Martin atended a rally at Augusta’s Democratic headquarters. WJBF News Channel 6’s Paige Tucker has the story.
Augusta, GA—Governor Sarah Palin, (R) Alaska: “The eyes of America are on you. Georgia, you are on all our minds.“
The 11th hour push started at sunrise, in Augusta. Governor Sarah Palin joined Saxby Chambliss for a rally on this election eve.
Palin: “Thankfully, Saxby has built a record of real achievements in service to his state, and country, and that’s exactly the kind of man we need in Washington. We must send Saxby back to the U.S. Senate.“
Supporters lined up at 6:00 a.m. to get in the James Brown Arena, but one man started waiting at midnight.
Phillip: “I just wanted to make sure I was in the front row.“
Governor Palin supporters say they’re not surprised the former V.P. nominee can still attract a crowd.
Susan Conger, Augusta, GA: “This is somebody young, who believes in America, the Constitution, and all the things our forefathers fought so hard for, so long ago.“
One standout in this sea of faces…kids.
‘Maverick’: “I’m Maverick, and i’m 10.“
Paige Tucker, reporting: “Maverick? That’s quite the name.“
Governor Palin made his name famous. Monday, voters say she put Augusta on the map, campaigning here for this closely watched race.
Loretta Howard, Martinez, GA: “She has a presence. She’s so articulate. It seems like it was more about Sarah than Saxby, but it’s going to help him. I really believe it will.“
Senator Saxby Chambliss, (R) Georgia: “The 41st Republican seat in the U.S. Senate is critical. That’s why the world is watching Georgia. We’re gonna have a great day, and a great night, tomorrow, because we’re going to win re-election because of you.“
Governor Palin also went to Savannah, Macon, and Atlanta, with Chambliss. After campaigning, she was scheduled to meet with President-Elect Barack Obama in Philadelphia.
