Plant Closes In Sandersville:  Jobs Coming To McDuffie County

There are 100 new jobs are coming to Thomson, as of July 2009, and depending on the economy, the number could grow to 150, going into 2010. Thomson Plastics will expand its operation by 50,000-square feet to accommodate the move of the production and assembly operations from the Sandersville facility, which is about an hour and a half from Augusta. (McDuffie County, Georgia)—Jerry Harrison, CEO, Thomson Plastics: “It’s tough economic times that we’re all going through and Thomson Plastics has not been ignored unfortunately. We’re feeling some of the pain from last year and going in to 2009.”

The CEO of Thomson Plastics says closing up shop in Sandersville and expanding operations at his plant in Thomson comes with mixed emotion.

“It’s kind of Thomson McDuffie County’s gain. Unfortunately, Sandersville…Washington County’s loss, but we have no choice but to do this and this is primarily to get our operating costs of this company in line with the current economic situation.”

So, 100 new jobs are coming to Thomson as of July 2009, and depending on the economy, could grow to 150 going in 2010.  The Thomson operation will expand by 50-thousand square feet to accommodate the move of the production and assembly operations from the Sandersville facility which is about an hour and a half from Augusta. The groundbreaking will start in about a week.

Charlie Newton, McDuffie County Commission Chairman:  “I do wish that we were in an environment that you could have expanded here and in Sandersville we hate to see our neighbors lose in this but I just have to say I’m happy you made the decision to come here instead of this plant going there.

Growth is happening all over in McDuffie County. New and used MRI’s will be sold at Reliant Medical. Acclaim Lighting. A wholesale distribution center is adding more jobs and Amcor, a shrink wrap company is also bring in dozens of new workers.

Mayor Kenneth Usry, Thomson, GA:  “What makes us tick here in Thomson-McDuffie County is our existing industry. These folks are the ones that keep our engine running. They are the ones that continue to show growth every year and that’s the track record of all communities that have good industry in them.”

People can apply for a job at Thomson Plastics by going to the Georgia Department of Labor,  232 Main Street, in Thomson, Georgia. Applications will not be taken at the plant.
