Augusta, GA—A case of H1N1 Flu has been confirmed at Fort Gordon.
Press Release (via email):
FORT GORDON, GA - Fort Gordon has one confirmed case of the H1N1 flu, a 42-year-old staff sergeant who is on temporary duty at the Post.
According to Eisenhower Army Medical Center (EAMC) the soldier had mild symptoms during the examination on June 4th, and was not admitted to the hospital. He was not given anti-viral treatment, and was given bed rest at his quarters.
The sergeant had mild symptoms, including low fever and a sore throat. The treating physician decided to test for flu, because EAMC policy is to be pro-active regarding anyone with flu-like symptoms. After two days, the patient no longer had symptoms.
Physicians at Eisenhower are confident that appropriate measures were taken to mitigate the threat of infection to the community.
All other military personnel in his unit were examined and interviewed by preventive medicine personnel at EAMC.
The culture for viral infection was sent to the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, in San Antonio, TX, for testing and came back as a positive on June 11th.
The sergeant is assigned to the 230th Combat Support Battalion, Fort Gillem, GA, a National Guard unit, and is at Fort Gordon for his annual training. He is scheduled to complete his training on Sunday and return home.
