Beat the Heat Checklist!
- Slow down and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day
- Take frequent shade breaks
- Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty; avoid caffeine and alcohol
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Avoid too much sunshine and use sunscreen when you must be outside
- Protect your face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat
- Eat small meals and eat more often; eat more salads and other foods that do not require cooking
- Avoid using appliances that generate heat during the day, such as clothes dryers and ovens
- Make sure your home is properly insulated to conserve energy and reduce your home’s power demands for air conditioning
- Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning
- NEVER leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles! Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can reach over 140 degrees F within minutes!
- REMEMBER - YOUR PETS GET HOT TOO!
- Exercise your dog in the early morning or evening hours when it’s not so hot
- Keep plenty of fresh, cool water available for your pet at all times
- Make sure your pet has a shelter to stay cool outside
- Keep your pet well-groomed, but resist shaving all of its fur because its coat will present sunburn
- Let your pet stay inside during the hottest part of the day if at all possible
