Augusta, GA—It was a search by land and air for 16-year-old Cornelius Antwan Moore. For more than six hours, Richmond County investigators searched several areas, including Cherry Tree Crossing.
Investigator James Kelly, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office: “Law enforcement has a done a reverse 911 call, and a broadcast has been sent out to everyone in this area.“
Investigators say Moore is a suspect in last week’s deadly home invasion that claimed the life of 23-year-old Jezreel Hammond. The search started early Tuesday after authorities served him a search warrant at his house. Investigators say he jumped out the house window and ran. Authorities say Moore than stole a car and they found it near the Cherry Tree Crossing area. Neighbors here say the violence is getting out of hand.
Ms. Langston, Neighbor: “Something is going on over here all the time they be shooting every night around here, in this area. When it gets dark, I go in. I can’t stay out here.“
Vanessa Dunbar, Neighbor: “Everyday, you see stuff like this. It makes you scared to come out the door. I know that everything, when you come out the door, you taking a chance, anyhow, but this is just extra hard on people.“
During the day, deputies stopped every driver that rode by their restricted area. They were handing out flyers and checking cars to make sure Moore wasn’t getting away. We talked to the suspect’s sister, and here’s what she had to say.
Ms. Moore: “He ain’t never been in no trouble like this, before. This is the first time, that’s why it shocked me when it happened.“
Investigators say Moore has several ties to the Cherry Tree Crossing housing complex and that makes it harder to find him.
