Jefferson County, GA—According to a release, on Saturday afternoon (06-27-09) at approximately 2:55 p.m. a Deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling between Wrens and Louisville, Georgia when he observed a vehicle illegally passing other motorists. When he attempted to stop the vehicle a high speed chase ensued. The chase lasted approximately five minutes and reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The chase ended when the driver stopped his vehicle near the intersection of Campground Road and Quaker Road approximately 3 miles east of Wrens, Georgia and ran from the scene through a wooded area. The pursuing deputy arrived and detained a female passenger that was still with the suspect vehicle.

Meanwhile, a resident who lives near the scene where the vehicle stopped had heard the siren approach his property and observed a subject climb over his fence and run across a pasture beside his residence. The resident was in the pasture at the time tending to his livestock and attempted to stop the fleeing driver by chasing him with an all terrain vehicle and firing several warning shots from a handgun located inside the residents’ atv. According to statements, the resident yelled for the fleeing subject to stop several times before firing a final shot that struck the fleeing subject causing him to fall to the ground. The resident immediately stopped a passing motorist and instructed them to call 911 for an ambulance. Seconds later, the deputy that was initially chasing the vehicle arrived and remained until an ambulance arrived. The driver, identified as Brian Santana Lane, age 24 of Louisville, Georgia was transported to MCG where he is listed in “guarded condition” as of 8:30 p.m., Saturday night.

The resident, identified as Andrew Newton Swan Sr., 56 of Wrens, Georgia is being held at the Jefferson County Jail pending a charge of aggravated assault.
